The art of body piercing has been practiced all over the world for thousands of years, and it's still a hugely popular practice today. Ear piercings in particular were extremely common thousands of years ago. Even some of the oldest mummified remains were discovered with ear piercings over 5000 years ago (some fashion trends are eternal!). Nose piercings have also been prevalent throughout ancient history and are documented as far back as 1500 BC. Lip and tongue piercings were also a frequent trend within African and American tribal culture.
Today, certain piercings are still extremely common, and a 2008 survey showed that 1 in 10 people in the UK had some form of body piercing. As with tattoos, body piercings can be pretty addictive (I should know, I had my fair share of facial piercings when I was younger!). For some individuals, piercings as an art form can even become a form of extreme body modification.
Some people choose to be excessively modified for ceremonial and religious reasons, for others, it's all just a bit of fun and a form of self expression. At Magnum Tattoo Supplies where you can buy Dermal Punches online, we're really big on body piercings, so today I wanted to show some appreciation for some extreme body modifications! Let's take a look...
First up - the Corset Piercing. This consists of a succession of Ball Closure Rings fitted on the surface of the back where the skin is a little looser. They're arranged in such a way that allows for lace to be looped between each piercing to create various patterns, often in the shape of a corset. I've seen quite a few of these at various tattoo conventions, and they look really cool in person!
The Guinness World Records recognise the most pierced men and women in the world. I think they're pretty brave to adorn all of their facial piercings. I know from personal experience that certain facial piercings can be quite laborious when it comes to healing, but for many, the difficult post-piercing process is all part of the ritual of extreme body modification.
A really extreme example of body modification! A lot of our customers tend to buy BCR jewellery for septum piercings, ear piercings, and nose piercings, however this guy has taken it to another level with excessive surface piercings along his arms. I'd normally assume that this type of piercing would get caught on everything, from clothing to body sponges in the shower, but I've had a couple of surface piercings myself and I never had any trouble with them!
This person has gone for a really extreme look, firstly with the large stretched earlobes and 'snake-like flesh tubes', along with another extreme form of body modification in the form of the transdermal implant. This type of modification occurs when some sort of object (often silicone) is placed just below the skin, and in time, the rest of the skin heals around it taking the form of the silicone shape. It can often create a 'devil horn' effect. In this instance, the devil horn effect is pretty extreme and it's accentuated by the black contact lenses they're also sporting.
So there you have it - some really extreme body modifications that have been taken to the next level!
