1. What is Pay in 3?

Pay in 3 is an interest-free loan from PayPal that lets you split your purchase into three repayments. The first payment is taken at the time of purchase, followed by two further monthly payments. It’s a form of credit, so please consider whether it’s right for you and whether you can afford the repayments. Missed payments could make it harder or more expensive to get credit in the future.

2. Who can use Pay in 3?

Pay in 3 is available to eligible UK residents. It won’t appear for every purchase or customer. PayPal may not offer Pay in 3 based on your PayPal history, the transaction type, or the risk assessment at checkout. A soft credit check is carried out, but this won’t impact your credit score.

3. How can I pay with Pay in 3?

If you’re eligible and your basket total is between £30 and £2,000, Pay in 3 will appear as an option at PayPal checkout. You’ll receive a decision in seconds. If approved, your plan begins immediately.

4. Are there any fees?

PayPal doesn’t charge any setup fees, application fees, or late fees for Pay in 3. However, your bank may apply fees if a payment fails or is returned (e.g. for insufficient funds).

5. How long does a Pay in 3 plan last?

Your loan lasts two months. One payment is due at purchase, with two more monthly payments following on the same date each month.

6. Where can I use Pay in 3?

Pay in 3 can be used at most UK merchants that accept PayPal. While your purchase can be in any supported currency, PayPal will convert it to GBP at checkout before applying your Pay in 3 plan. Currency conversion fees apply as per your PayPal User Agreement.

7. Why is Pay in 3 not available at checkout?

Pay in 3 may not show up if the merchant, transaction type, or basket contents aren’t eligible. PayPal may also withhold the option based on their risk checks or your past activity.

8. How will Pay in 3 appear in my PayPal activity?

You’ll see the full purchase amount listed under the merchant’s name, showing PayPal has paid them in full. Your first repayment appears separately and equals one-third of your total purchase.

9. Can I opt out of seeing Pay in 3?

Yes. You can contact PayPal support to remove Pay in 3 from your checkout view. You can also reverse this later if you change your mind.
