It's almost time for the Chinese New Year celebrations to begin.  The festival which celebrates the beginning of a new year on the traditional Chinese calendar is a beautiful occasion that lasts around 3 weeks.  Usually referred to as the Spring Festival in mainland China, Chinese New Year celebrations typically consist of fireworks, putting up decorations, lots of wonderful food, and exchanging red envelopes with gifts of money.  It's a symbolic time in which to embrace new beginnings, whilst also reflecting on the past.

2020 is the year of the rat. In the Chinese zodiac, the rat is the first of all of the zodiac animals, and according to Chinese legend, the Jade emperor said that the order of the animals would be decided by the order in which they arrived at his party. The cunning rat tricked the Ox into giving him a ride to the party, and just as they were about to reach the finish line, the rat jumped down ahead of the ox, taking first place.

In Chinese culture, the rat is said to symbolise good fortune and wealth, with some Chinese parents praying to the rat when they want to conceive because of the high reproduction rate of the rat.  Those born under the year of the rat are said to be optimists who are energetic and likeable.  They are sensitive to other's feelings but also stubborn characters, who are quite tight with their finances. Let's hope it's a great year for all of those who were born under this sign!

As well as being a brilliant zodiac sign that is highly regarded, rats also make for great tattoos. They aren't always the most desirable of creatures, however they're very interesting and intelligent beings, and look cool in a number of tattoo styles.  Whether you opt for a traditional or a realistic piece, rats are the perfect subject matter when it comes to tattooing.
