Roof of mouth tattoos aren't a particularly popular phenomenon, but there's growing popularity in Brussels, thanks to Belgian tattoo artist Indy Voet. Working from The Purple Sun Tattoo Parlour, Indy's work largely consists of solid traditional designs and blackwork. He also does hand-poked tattoos for the smaller, more intricate designs, such as roof of mouth tattoos, which he's been doing for around 5 years.
It would be particularly difficult to tattoo the inside of someone's mouth with a tattoo machine, so hand-poked is the best option, which allows Indy to get into the more intricate area without subjecting the area to a heavy hitting machine. The healing process is pretty simple as well, with the natural resources of the mouth, and oral mucosal cells regenerating quite quickly, which speeds up the healing process of mouth tattoos. Indy notes that it's a good idea to avoid any spicy foods and strong liquor during the healing process.
Despite the sensitive and difficult location of the tattoo, Indy's clients generally claim that roof of mouth tattoos are almost painless, or at least 'very easy to handle', which we're quite surprised to hear! The only thing some people may complain about is the jaw muscles aching from keeping their mouth wide open for a prolonged period.
