When Tattoos were Taboo | Kuro Sumi Cherry Shading Ink

RSS
Tattoos are extremely popular at the moment, and that popularity seems to be constantly on the rise, thanks to social media outlets such as Instagram, celebrities with tattoos, and the growing social acceptance of tattoos.  A 2015 UK Survey found that 30% of 25-39 year olds had tattoos, and we reckon that it's probably an even higher percentage now. It's easy to take for granted just how accessible tattoos are these days, and it's great that there's a lot less stigma attached to tattoos, but this wasn't always the case, especially for women.
We've compiled a great collection of photos of men and women who sported head-to-toe tattoos before tattoos were mainstream.  It was quite a brave thing to be covered in tattoos back then, especially for women, and we really do admire them for embracing the tattooed look!  As a supplier of Kuro Sumi Cherry Shading Ink which creates the perfect vintage 'grey wash' tattoo effect, we love the vintage look when it comes to tattooing, so make sure you check out these vintage tattoos from the 1900's right here.
First up, Maud Wagner who was one of the first well-known female tattoo artists in the United States.  This picture was from 1907.  We think she looks great!
A beautiful tattooed lady sporting her tattoos with pride
This gentleman looks great with his Sailor Jerry inspired tattoos
Tattoos in Japan were particularly taboo, and the stigma surrounding tattoos still remains today.  We think this lady is particularly brave, and her back piece is phenomenal.
A King Kong inspired chest piece for this gentleman.  His traditional tattoos look stunning.
The gorgeous Betty Broadbent showing off her beautiful tattoos.  We think she looks wonderful.
If you have any vintage photos of tattooed people from the early 1900's then we'd love to check them out.  Make sure you get in touch by leaving us a comment in the section below.  Make sure you check out the Kuro Sumi Cherry Shading ink on our website, which is perfect for creating vintage-inspired tattoos!
Love Toni...
